What is a microfiber cloth?
Jan 24, 2021
A microfiber cloth consists of a large number of thin individual fibers that are about 60 times thinner than a hair. As a rule, a microfiber cloth consists of 20-30% polyamide and 70-80% polyester. Polyester makes the cloth robust and durable, while polyamide is soft and absorbent.
The special features of the microfiber cloth are the large amount of processed fibers and their star-shaped structure. Their special structure creates a positively and negatively charged electrostatic charge that attracts and holds dust and small dirt. This makes microfiber products particularly suitable for car cleaning.
Microfiber towels are classified according to their basis weight, pile length and weave. The basis weight is given in GSM (= grams per square meter, i.e. grams per square meter). The higher the GSM value, the denser and longer the fibers are woven. The GSM number usually ranges between 100-1500. Microfiber cloths with a high GSM number usually feel thicker and are suitable for work where little pressure should be exerted. Microfiber towels also differ in pile length. There are long-pile and short-pile towels, each suitable for different areas.
the all-rounder in car care
A microfiber cloth is essential when cleaning your car. It achieves a high cleaning effect on various surfaces and is suitable for many types of contamination. Microfiber cloths can be used in many ways in car care, be it for cleaning the windows, the interior or the paintwork.
Which cloth is suitable for which application?
Depending on the nature of the surface to be cleaned, a different microfiber cloth is used. In the following we will go into the most important areas in the car. The right microfiber cloth for your car -> click here
Clean interior & windows:
If you want to clean the cockpit or your windows, we recommend a low-pile cloth with a GSM number between 200 and 400, which absorbs and binds the smallest dirt particles between its fibers. The short fibers absorb little product and enable streak-free cleaning of glass surfaces. Waffle towels are particularly suitable because they have a higher absorbency due to their small "pockets".
polishing and sealing:
Since microfiber cloths are particularly gentle on paintwork, they are ideal for applying or removing care products. To apply the polish, we recommend a short-pile cloth with a GSM value between 200 and 400 so that it does not absorb the care product. Because the care product should be on the vehicle and not in the cloth. You can also apply targeted pressure with a cloth with a low GSM value. If you want to remove residues of the polish or seal, however, a high-pile microfibre cloth with a high suction power is ideal. The long protruding fibers can absorb excess product effortlessly and without damaging the paintwork.
Insider tip: With our Rocket Black Laser-Cut Microfiber Cloth you kill two birds with one stone, since it is bilateral. The short-pile side is for applying polish and the long-pile side is for removing.
For quick and paint-friendly vehicle drying after the car wash, we recommend using a microfiber drying cloth with long-pile fibers and a high GSM value (from 500). The higher the basis weight (GSM) and the longer the fibers, the more water it can absorb. Long-pile towels with a high GSM value are therefore particularly suitable for drying after washing the car. A high fiber density also prevents scratches from occurring when wiping. The softer and plush the cloth, the potentially more scratch-resistant it is. Microfiber towels with the twisted pile weave are particularly suitable for drying. The fibers form a loop and are twisted, resulting in a comparatively high surface. This makes the cloth extremely absorbent.
How do I clean a microfiber cloth?
Microfiber towels can easily be washed in the washing machine. A quick wash cycle at 40° is recommended. If it is heavily soiled, it can also be washed at up to 60°. To increase the service life, you should place the cloths in a laundry net so that no fluff from the other laundry in the machine gets into the microfiber cloth. Detergent for delicates can be added as detergent. It is important that no fabric softener is used, otherwise the fibers will stick together. You can dry the microfiber cloths either in the tumble dryer, preferably in a laundry net, or in the air.
